2010 Winter Games Lesson Plans For Preschoolers

February 13th, 2010 by admin

Woo Hoo, the olympics are here, and the best part? They are in my country this year!! I’ve been coming up with winter olympics learning ideas. Here are some great lesson plans for the 2010 games to help you get in the “olympic spirit”

2010 winter games

I think this idea is great for the kids. They love to perform. Get kids active in learning about the winter games by holding their very own mock 2010 Winter Olympics event. To do this, first determine which games the kids involved can safely play according to their ages and skill abilities. Also consider inviting family, friends, and neighbors to add to the excitement. You can turn your local park or back yard into a mock sports arena for the day. Be sure there is enough necessary equipment for everyone participating.

How about incorporating social studies into your Winter Olympics Lesson Plan? The globe is an excellent tool for teaching kids about the various nations involved with the Winter Olympics in 2010. First, give the kids a list of all the nations and see if they can find them all on the globe. If not, search for them together. Accompany that with a few fun, interesting, and historical facts about each. Index cards are great for this. This is great for kids preschool through high school. Just design facts around their level of understanding.

Another fun way to use the globe is to make it a game. Put the globe in the center of the room on a table. Use index cards to prepare fact sheets for each nation. The back of the cards should feature the name of the nation and three or four facts about each. The card caller (usually the parent or teacher) can state a fact or the name of the nation. Students then can shout out “globe” to indicate they know the answer. The student who shouts globe first then needs to go to the globe and point out the nation indicated by its name or fact. Scores can be tallied or not, depending on whether you wish the game to be competitive.

What a better way to teach kids about the various sports except have them participate in the sports themselves? Kids of all ages may be wondering if or how they can play the games and sports featured in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Taking them to an ice skating rink is one fun way to do this. Some rinks even offer mini lessons in ice skating, hockey, and other winter games. Another way to do this is to teach the kids these games yourself. If you don’t know all the rules, find a good library book that does or look up the rules online.

As you can see if you get creative you can incorporate preschool learning into the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Do you have any further ideas? Please leave me a comment=) Thanks and enjoy.
